Google Layoff Employees: More Job Cuts for Tech Workers

The labor market, which has been consistently saturated with employees is clearly showing indications of slowing down, as certain companies are starting the new year by reducing their workforce. On Tuesday, Google revealed plans to lay off hundreds of employees in its advertising sales team, signaling ongoing workforce reductions at the Alphabet-owned company.

Google is joining the bandwagon of tech companies turning to artificial intelligence software and automation to streamline operations rather than human labor. While discussions and questions about why Google is laying off employees are yet to settle, other companies have also declared plans to lay off staff this year.

The roles receiving this harsh blow at Google include the Assistant team, the augmented reality hardware division within the devices and services product area(hardware teams overseeing Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit), and the central engineering team. The company attributes these layoffs to its efforts to enhance efficiency, realign resources with its major product priorities, and bring about improvement across the board.

A spokesperson for Google explained, “We’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead. To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities. Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally. We’re continuing to support any impacted employees as they look for new roles here at Google and beyond.”

Shares of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, experienced a 0.9% decline in intraday trading following reports of the layoffs. Google confirmed that the restructuring will result in the elimination of hundreds of roles. This workforce reduction follows Google’s previous major layoff in early 2023, where approximately 12,000 employees, constituting about 6% of its workforce, were let go.

Several companies, such as Amazon, Twitch, Duolingo, Discord, Macy’s, Citigroup, BlackRock, etc have recently revealed plans to reduce their workforce. Some of these companies, which are currently implementing job cuts, had previously carried out more extensive layoffs over the past year or so. Since then, both inflation and expectations for a recession have decreased, contrary to the predictions made by most economists as recently as the middle of last year.

In October of the previous year, the continued downturn in aviation revenues caused by the impact of the pandemic led Rolls-Royce to lay off 6% of its employees. Concurrently, Microsoft’s professional social media platform, LinkedIn, undertook workforce reductions, laying off 668 employees across engineering, product development, talent acquisition, and finance departments. This move followed a prior reduction of 716 staff in May of the same year, which was accompanied by the closure of its job application operations in China.

    How do Layoffs Impact Employees?

Experiencing a layoff can bring about severe financial hardships for those affected. The abrupt termination of employment translates to the loss of a steady income, employee benefits, and various job-related perks. Despite the provision of severance packages, many individuals may find it difficult to meet their financial obligations, particularly if they are responsible for supporting a family or contend with high living expenses. The resulting stress, stemming from the inability to cover bills and provide for loved ones, can significantly impact the mental and emotional well-being of those who have been laid off.

Google Layoff Employees: How do Layoffs Impact Employees?

The turmoil triggered by layoffs and the subsequent career transitions can deeply affect the mental health of individuals. Confronting uncertainties, financial constraints, and the pressure of re-entering a competitive job market can elevate levels of stress, and anxiety, and even contribute to feelings of depression. Furthermore, the loss of a familiar work environment, daily routine, and a sense of purpose can compound these challenges, fostering a sense of helplessness and diminishing self-esteem.

  • Amazon Echo Show 8: Users will be Charged for Digital Photo Frame

Amazon Echo Show 8: Users will be Charged for Digital Photo Frame

Over the years, Amazon has introduced a range of smart speakers and Alexa-enabled devices. Among the top favorite Alexa devices is the Amazon Echo Show 8. For those unfamiliar with Alexa products, the Echo Show series includes smart displays integrated with Alexa’s capabilities. Despite being Amazon’s second smallest smart display, the Echo Show 8 boasts an impressive eight-inch touchscreen, and unlike the Echo Show 10 and 15, it is compact and very portable.

What is the Amazon Echo Show 8 used for?

The Echo Show 8 has quite a lot of uses; from live streaming videos to playing music, checking weather updates, connecting to home security cameras and other smart home devices, and even making video calls. The third generation of the Echo Show 8 which is yet to hit the market (possibly late October 2023) will be sold for $150. A slight increase from its predecessor—the Amazon Echo Show 8(2021 version), which was initially sold for $129.99.

    Amazon Echo Show 8 Subscription

Amazon is introducing a new feature for its Echo Show 8. However, this added functionality comes at an extra cost. The Echo Show 8 Photos Edition, unveiled at the recent fall hardware event, carries a $10 premium over the standard model.

This premium allows you to set your photos as the “primary home screen content.” Priced at $159.99, the Show 8 Photos Edition boasts all the same features as the third-gen Echo Show 8. The additional $10 grants you a complimentary six-month subscription to Amazon’s latest service, PhotosPlus, enabling the enhanced photo mode. PhotosPlus introduces Photo Mode, which prioritizes personal memories and images shared by your loved ones on the Echo Show 8 Photos Edition’s home screen.

The New Echo Show 8 Features (third generation)

It also boasts a 30-second slideshow rotation for a more impactful display around your home, along with 25 GB of storage for photos and videos from Amazon Photos. Prime members receive unlimited photo storage and an additional 5 GB for videos. Despite sharing the same hardware, the standard Show 8 does not support the new Photo Mode, which is exclusive to the Echo Show 8 Photos Edition.

A persistent critique of Echo Show devices has been the absence of a dedicated photo frame feature, especially in comparison to Google’s Nest Hub devices, which excel in this regard. Currently, activating photo frame mode on Echo Show displays lasts only three hours before reverting to a rotating display often featuring ads and promotions, unless you navigate menus to disable it. The third-gen Echo Show 8 is available in two variants: standard and Photos Edition.

    Subscription

Photo Mode revolutionizes the display on existing Show screens, ensuring photos take center stage indefinitely, Ramirez assures. The user interface foregrounds your photos, while information like weather and time recedes into the background.

Subscribing to a digital photo frame service isn’t a novel concept; certain frames require payment for uploads or offer supplementary features at a cost. For instance, the Skylight Calendar offers a digital calendar with an optional $39 annual fee for a photo frame feature. They also provide a Skylight Frame with no upload fee but offer additional features like cloud backup and albums for $39 per year.

Beyond the initial six months, maintaining Photo Mode requires a monthly fee of $1.99. Although cancellation is an option at any time, discontinuing the subscription reverts your Echo Show 8 Photos Edition to its standard configuration.

Likewise, the popular Aura Frame comes without a fee and is $10 cheaper than Amazon’s new photo-centric Show. However, it lacks other smart display features such as Alexa voice assistance, smart home controls, and streaming capabilities.

  • Vodafone and Amazon to Accelerate 4G/5G Connectivity in Europe and Africa

Vodafone and Amazon to Accelerate 4G/5G Connectivity in Europe and Africa

Vodafone and Amazon announced today their plans to extend their 4G/5G networks across Europe and Africa. Through Project Kuiper’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. Kuiper Systems LLC, or Project Kuiper for short is an Amazon subsidiary that was created back in 2019 with the mission of launching an expansive satellite internet network. A network delivers lightning-fast broadband internet access with minimal latency.

This strategic collaboration between the renowned British telco and Washington-based Satellite Internet access company will see the complete participation of both companies in beta testing Project Kuiper’s innovative services, slated to commence in 2024. The objective is clear—leverage Project Kuiper’s high-bandwidth, low-latency satellite network to deliver affordable 4G/5G connectivity to regions that have historically remained disconnected from the internet. Project Kuiper will establish vital connections, linking far-flung cellular antennas to the core telecom networks of Vodafone and Vodacom. Effectively circumventing the time and expense typically associated with deploying fibre-based or fixed wireless links to the core networks.

However, the collaboration Vodafone and Amazon doesn’t stop at expanding network reach. Amazon, the driving force behind Project Kuiper, envisions partnering with Vodafone to roll out high-speed broadband services to unserved and underserved communities on a global scale, not just in Africa. Both corporations are actively pursuing the possibilities of custom enterprise solutions, that meet the connectivity needs of businesses worldwide. These solutions encompass a range of offerings. From strong and reliable backup services for unforeseen events to expanding internet connectivity to rural infrastructure.

    Speaking on the Partnership

Chief Executive of Vodafone Group Margherita Della Valle, expressed the overarching mission of the partnership between Vodafone and Amazon. “Vodafone’s work with Project Kuiper will provide mobile connectivity to many of the estimated 40% of the global population without internet access. Supporting remote communities, their schools and businesses, the emergency services, and disaster relief. These connections will be complemented further through our own work on direct-to-smartphone satellite services.”

Meanwhile, Dave Limp, Amazon’s Senior Vice President for Devices and Services, affirmed that the project’s grand vision was to improve access to the internet, especially to those in remote areas. “Amazon is building Project Kuiper to provide fast, affordable broadband to tens of millions of customers in unserved and underserved communities. And our flexible network means we can connect places that have traditionally been difficult to reach.”

He further mentioned that “Teaming with a leading international service provider like Vodafone allows us to make a bigger impact faster in closing the digital divide in Europe and Africa. Together we’ll explore how we can help our customers get the most value from expanded connectivity. Particularly in areas like residential broadband, agriculture, education, healthcare, transportation, and financial services.”

The CEO of Vodacom Group Shameel Joosub, reinforced the commitment to bridging the connectivity gap in Africa. “At Vodacom, our purpose is to connect for a better future. And we work every day to bring more people in Africa online.” “Collaborating with Project Kuiper gives us an exciting new path to scale our efforts. Using Amazon’s satellite constellation to quickly reach more customers across the African continent.”

The implementation of these innovative plans is contingent on the deployment of Amazon’s production satellites. Amazon plans to commence testing two prototype satellites in the coming months, with full-scale production satellite deployment expected in 2024. The timeline is set for beta testing of Project Kuiper services with select customers by the end of 2024.

Vodafone’s Contributions Extends Beyond Internet Connectivity

Vodafone, through its various initiatives and platforms, is actively engaged in addressing several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The healthcare sector is on the precipice of transformation through technology. The convergence of digital tools and rapid connectivity promises to revolutionize healthcare access and patient care in remarkable ways. However, several nations still face pressing challenges in delivering good healthcare to the masses. Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular, bears the brunt of this crisis, driven by frail health systems and limited access to emergency care and transportation.

Vodafone and UN Sustainable Development Goals

In more ways than one, Vodafone provides support to healthcare providers across the globe with digital tools and better access to data to deliver better care. Vodafone provided connectivity to emergency hospitals across Europe and in Spain, the company was able to connect 500 wireless IoT alarms to the hospital beds of the largest hospital in Madrid. While in South Africa, their subsidiary Mezzanine, provided a PPE stock visibility solution to 350 hospitals for monitoring over 3,000 facilities across the country.

In response, to the maternity crisis, Vodafone introduced m-mama. An emergency referral service that connects pregnant women with emergency transport in locales where getting conventional ambulances isn’t feasible. This transformative solution is not confined to a single nation. It has single-handedly reduced maternal mortality by as much as 38% in certain regions of Tanzania. Vodafone has extended m-mama’s reach to Lesotho. And is on the brink of launching in Kenya, thanks to a dynamic partnership with USAID. With anticipated launches in other sub-Saharan African nations.

In the pursuit of other Sustainable Development Goals, Vodafone and Safaricom launched M-PESA, the flagship mobile money service in 2007. And also lends its support to addressing the eradication of hunger. With eVuna, a lifeline for small-scale farmers to access credit, and connect to potential buyers. Vodafone also has a Connected Education platform in Africa that empowers both students and teachers with resources.

Are Vodafone and Vodacom the Same?

Established in the year 1985, Vodafone is a prominent British mobile network operator, with a reach that extends far beyond the United Kingdom. The telecommunications giant has a huge presence in many countries across every continent. In terms of access and in areas where digital technology, especially internet connectivity is being utilized there has been quite a tremendous impact.

From its homeland in the United Kingdom to the far reaches of Albania, Australia and Czech Republic, to Germany. And Spain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, Qatar, and Ukraine. Vodafone remains an integral part of expanding the coverage of mobile technology globally.

On the other hand, Vodacom is a prominent South African mobile operator. While its roots may have originated in South Africa, Vodacom has expanded to several other African nations. Presently, Vodacom actively operates in South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, etc.

In 1994, through a collaboration between Telkom and Vodafone, South Africa initiated its mobile telecommunications services with the inception of Vodacom. Although it wasn’t until 2008 that Telkom made the strategic decision to cede its ownership of Vodacom to Vodafone.

In simple terms, a gift card is a redeemable voucher card that people use to make payments at specific retail stores. Form a mental picture of this, someone gifts you an MTN recharge card (airtime), because they couldn’t decide which plan to get you. Now, you head to an MTN store to redeem it to your choice airtime or you can sell it at any store that retails MTN cards. That’s just basically what gift cards are. Examples of gift cards include:

    1. Gaming gift cards like Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam.

  • India’s E-Commerce Giant Flipkart replenishes with a $700 million round

India’s E-Commerce Giant Flipkart replenishes with a $700 million round

At the end of July, Flipkart (The largest E-commerce service in India) raised a massive $1 billion, and less than six months later the Indian e-commerce company is ending off the year with another $700 million round.

The round includes money from existing investors DST Global, GIC, ICONIQ Capital and Tiger Global, and new backers Baillie Gifford, Greenoaks Capital, Steadview Capital, T. Rowe PriceAssociates and Qatar Investment Authority.

Adding that to the $210 million they closed in May, this round makes Flipkart past $2 billion in investor money in 2014, and around $2.7 billion in total.

Currently, Flipkart has over 14,000 staff and receives of 6 million monthly visits from 26-million plus registered users. It is said that the new funding will be spent on “long-term strategic investments in India” and on developing its technology and custom service platform. Earlier this year, Flipkart acquired the fashion-focused rival Myntra, and it looks like its open to snapping up other services and startups to boost their ever-fierce rivalry with big competitors, such as Amazon India and Snapdeal.

    Several Flipkart packages

Amazon had finally launched its service in India back in 2013, but in 2014 it really sped up in the process of making itself known through India. In addition to investing $2 billion in its local operations (just a day after Flipkart announced its $1 billion raise), the company snapped up a number of exclusive sales deals including Chinese phone company OnePlus.

Snapdeal made its own mega round this year when SoftBank led a $627 million round that closed in October. Despite the intense competition and rivals, and the amount of money and the price it costs to stay afloat, companies like Flipkart are using as much of their resources as possible to stay both online and ahead of the competition.

  • Amazon is getting “Fired” up for another smartphone

Amazon is getting “Fired” up for another smartphone

In June of 2014, Amazon tried to launch their newest product – the Fire phone. It was essentially a modified Android phone with a “unique” 3D display and a ton of references to different Amazon shops. It turned out that “Fire” was pretty cold, being a complete failure. The phone hit Amazon with a $170 million loss in its most recent financial quarter to account for “inventory valuation and supplier commitment cost.” The major commerce company is finding it hard to even give these things away; if you wander into a Amazon warehouse, you may just find a big pile of these lonely little buggers hoping; waiting for someone to come and make them theirs.

However, Bezos & CO aren’t giving up without a few punches here, truly living up to the phrase “if at first you don’t succeed, try again.” On Friday, Amazon released a software update for their Fire phone that adds new features and sources close to the giant company says they have plans of releasing a second Fire phone, just not anytime soon.

Among the new features in the Friday update is text translation for the Fire Phone’s Firefly app, where you can scan text and have it converted to or from English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Firefly has also been trained to identify 2,000 famous paintings, for those of you who like to walk around art museums with your mobile in your hand.

The update introduces a new camera feature named Best Shot, a (camera) app that takes three quick photos and lets the user choose the best ones. Amazon said this would be great for group photos or pictures of children or pets. There are also some minor UI changes, such as adjustable SMS settings and blocking phone calls by the number. Added to their “flop” phone was a office-document editing app, VPN support, and even more which you can find in the full list of changes here.

On the topic of making another phone that customers will actually like, VentureBeat reports that several sources agree that the online megastore will take another shot at it, but it’s not in a hurry. It has “gone back to the drawing board,” one source claimed, and is currently pondering which features to put into the new device that would make it appealing, with an eye to ship it sometime in 2016.

And we may be able to expect more phones to come from Amazon after that. The company CEO Jeff Bezos gives the Fire Phone line full support and believes it’s a young product that the company will need to “iterate” over time.

What do you think of a new Fire phone coming out, or about the changes in the new update? Leave a comment below.

  • Amazon Takes $170 Million Hit on Fire Phone

Amazon Takes $170 Million Hit on Fire Phone

In case you didn’t know, here’s the crazy thing about Amazon: it isn’t really known for turning a profit. Just think about that for a second. The company that wants to sell you everything, get it to you by any means necessary and serves as the backbone for a considerable chunk of the internet doesn’t usually make money at the end of the day. And even with that financial truth entered into the record, people — from Wall Street types to armchair prognosticators — cheer whenever Amazon avoids losing as much money in a quarter as they expect it to. Today is not one of those days.

Amazon’s Q3 results dropped not too long ago, and it packs some big numbers. While the Everything Store raked in $20.58 billion in revenue (which is more than what most small countries make in a year) it just wasn’t enough to please those pesky shareholders — the company’s stock price is down over 10 percent in after-hours trading. Amazon’s business model is the epitome of spending money to make money, except what operating profits they do post are pretty meager and big losses like today’s (think $437 million) aren’t rare. In fairness, this quarter has been a really busy one for the folks in Seattle. After all, Amazon snapped up Twitch for a billion dollars, expanded its same-day delivery service in six cities across the United States, and launched a phone that no one actually seems to want (if you’re reading, Bezos, we’d still like hard sales numbers for that thing). The question is, how much longer can Amazon afford to spend and spend and acquire and expand and develop before shareholders — the people who back the company with their own money — decide that Amazon’s not going where they want it to?

Update: So our wishes for firm Fire Phone sales numbers haven’t been answered, but we’ve now got a better idea of how it’s doing thanks to the company’s CFO. During the company’s earnings conference call, Amazon’s Tom Szkutak said it took a $170 million hit “primarily related to Fire phone inventory valuation and supplier commitment costs.” Yikes.

  • Report: Amazon considering live TV streaming service

Report: Amazon considering live TV streaming service

IDG NEWS SERVICE – Amazon has approached several major media conglomerates to discuss adding live cable TV channels to its Prime Instant Video service, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

The idea is still at a very early stage, and it might not go ahead, the newspaper said, without disclosing its source.

Amazon is one of several companies that already offers on-demand movies and TV shows, but live TV would put it squarely in competition with existing cable and satellite TV providers.

Some of those providers already offer live TV over the Internet, but only as an extension of an existing pay TV subscription.

After news, music and video rentals, live TV is seen by many as the next big area that will be disrupted by the Internet. Amazon’s moves could be part of industrywide posturing in preparation for that.

The report came on the same day Verizon Communications, a major broadband Internet provider, said it is buying OnCue, a cloud TV service developed by Intel.

Sony recently said it would begin offering live television through a video service to be delivered through Sony PlayStation and connected TVs later this year, although offered no other details.

Over-the-air broadcasters are also moving toward the Internet. But in a twist on services offered in other countries, some local TV stations require a cable or satellite TV subscription in order to access live streaming programming over the Internet, despite it being broadcast free of charge over local airwaves.

One company that is attempting to break up this model, Aereo, has found itself targeted by lawsuits. Aereo receives and relays local TV broadcasts to subscribers over the Internet without the approval of the broadcasters. Aereo says it doesn’t need their approval, but TV stations disagree. That battle is heading to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Wall Street Journal report noted the difficulty Amazon might face in getting access to content, especially if media conglomerates want to avoid upsetting major cable and satellite providers.

For all of the different brands familiar to consumers, today’s pay TV market is dominated by a handful of large companies that own many of the channels.

General Electric, for example, owns the NBC and Telemundo over-the-air networks, cable channels including CNBC, NBC Sports Network, USA Network and SyFy, cable TV and Internet operator Comcast, and a third of online streaming service Hulu.

  • Tablets, According to Staples

    Tablets, According to Staples

The original Kindle Fire.Amazon Readying Mulitple New Kindle

Amazon has big plans for its coming onslaught of tablets to compete with Apple’s iPad and Google’s Nexus 7. Reuters reports Staples US Retail president, Demos Parneros as saying there are five or six upcoming tablets, among them a a 10-inch model. That 10-inch model would clearly be positioned against iPad, as well as a plethora of Android tablets. Rumors about a bigger Kindle Firehave been circulating for some time, but since Staples sells the Kindle Fire, this 10-inch model is a bit more believable now.

Amazon’s first-generation Kindle Fire.According to previous reports from BGR, the 10-inch Kindle Fire will be feature-packed with a quad-core processor, front-facing camera, microUSB port, and possibly an HDMI-out port. The new tablet will apparently be a major step up from the current Kindle Fire in terms of appearance and design.

    Other Upcoming Kindle Fires

The original Kindle Fire tablet which Amazon debuted in September last year is due for a refresh any day now (rumors point to the end of July), so we could count the 7-inch Kindle Fire 2 as one of those other many tablets Amazon has planned. It’s not clear if the five to six tablets Pareneros mentioned are actually really two tablet models (a 7-inch and a 10-inch) with different storage options or even display resolutions—or if another Kindle Fire size is coming too. The Kindle Fire has a 1024 by 600 pixel resolution, but NPD DisplaySearch recently told CNet about an additional 7-inch model with 1280 by 800 pixels resolution—on par with the flying-off-the-shelvesGoogle Nexus 7. That high-resolution display will help make the Kindle better suited for reading. NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim also noted he expects an 8.9-inch Kindle Fire 2 with a 1920 by 1200 pixels full-HD display. It might not be the iPad’s (2048 by 1536 pixels) retina display, but the bump in pixels would certainly make the Kindle Fire more competitive. Digitimes alsoreported an 8.9-inch Kindle Fire is coming. Whatever this bunch of Kindle Fire tablets turn out to be, tablet wars will be in full swing before the holidays.
