OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has finalized an agreement for the return of Sam Altman as CEO just days after firing him from the board, concluding intense deliberations regarding the future of the startup at the forefront of the artificial intelligence surge.
As part of the resolution, the company has committed to restructuring the board of directors that had previously ousted Altman. Bret Taylor, formerly co-CEO of Salesforce, has been appointed as chair, and Larry Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary, joins the board.
Altman expressed his anticipation for returning to OpenAI in a post on X. Following Altman’s abrupt dismissal on Friday, the original board provided limited explanation, citing his lack of transparency and the necessity to safeguard OpenAI’s mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.
The reinstatement of Altman signals a potential new phase for the nonprofit startup, which has long grappled with internal concerns about the risks of AI and its potential commercialization.

The reshuffling on Tuesday appears to favor Altman and the financial supporter Microsoft (MSFT.O), which is globally deploying OpenAI’s technology for business clients. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella welcomed the changes in a statement on X, stating, “We believe this is a first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance.”
Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo will continue on the new “initial board” as outlined by OpenAI. It remains unclear if non-equity-holding directors will retain their seats. Or if investors, including the 49% owner of Microsoft, will secure their first appointments. Reports suggest that some investors are exploring legal options due to the recent events that jeopardized OpenAI’s future, previously estimated to have a valuation exceeding $80 billion.
Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, commented on the clarity in OpenAI’s path following the recent tumult. Noting that Altman’s leadership will significantly influence the company’s direction under the new board.
Recall that Altman’s departure triggered turmoil at OpenAI, leading to President Greg Brockman’s resignation in protest. Altman’s return was initially expected, but the board surprised by appointing Emmett Shear as interim CEO on Sunday.
In a post on X, Shear detailed the intense efforts undertaken to restore stability and ultimately bring back Altman. Stressing the commitment to all stakeholders. Altman’s reinstatement was facilitated in part by Microsoft. During his absence, Microsoft offered him the opportunity to lead a new research team. Alongside Brockman and other colleagues leaving OpenAI.
By Monday, a significant portion of OpenAI’s 700-plus staff had threatened to join Microsoft unless the board resigned and Altman was reinstated. Leveraging Microsoft’s substantial computing power, a key asset for OpenAI’s technology. Co-founder and President Brockman celebrated the resolution with a staff selfie late Tuesday night.
