  • Bridgerton Season 1 Review

    Bridgerton Season 1 Review

Shondaland’s adaptation of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series landed on Netflix on December 25, 2020. Whic came in just in time to be the perfect holiday binge. What makes this show stand out isn’t just the whirlwind romance and tantalizing scandals set against the backdrop of London’s high society, but how it redefines the period drama genre with a modern twist that’s both refreshing and inclusive.

The series introduces us to the Bridgerton family, a lively and engaging clan of eight siblings navigating the labyrinth of love, duty, and society’s expectations. At the forefront of season one is Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter, played by Phoebe Dynevor. Daphne enters the marriage market with the hope of finding true love. A lofty aspiration in a world where marriages are more about alliances and less about affection. What unfolds is far more than your average British high-society romance.

One of the most striking aspects of Bridgerton is its diverse casting, a deliberate departure from the norm, thanks to the creative genius of Shonda Rhimes. While period dramas often face criticism for their lack of diversity, Bridgerton challenges this by presenting a world where people of color hold significant positions of power and influence. For example, the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset, portrayed by Regé-Jean Page, is not only a pivotal character but also one whose presence defies the conventional expectations of the genre. His chemistry with Daphne Bridgerton is electric, igniting a love story that is as complex as it is passionate.

The storyline of Bridgerton season 1

Bridgerton Season 1 Storyline: A Dance Between Love and Scandal

The narrative of Bridgerton season one centers on the Bridgerton family, led by the protective and charismatic Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), who tries to manage his siblings’ affairs while grappling with his own romantic dilemmas. However, it’s Daphne’s journey that captures the audience’s heart as she navigates the treacherous waters of the marriage market. Her romance with Simon, the enigmatic Duke of Hastings, begins as a ruse to protect both their interests but quickly spirals into a passionate affair that neither can resist.

But the romance is just one layer of Bridgerton. The series is steeped in scandal, much of which is fueled by the mysterious Lady Whistledown, an anonymous gossip columnist voiced by the iconic Julie Andrews. Lady Whistledown’s sharp wit and keen observations send ripples through London society, exposing secrets that many would prefer to keep hidden. Her commentary adds a layer of intrigue, making the series as much about social maneuvering as it is about romantic entanglements.

The Visuals, Performances, and Accolades That Defined Bridgerton Season 1

Adding to the drama is Queen Charlotte, played with a commanding presence by Golda Rosheuvel. The Queen’s influence is undeniable, and her interest in the goings-on of the ton adds a regal layer of tension to the series. She is both an observer and a participant in the social games that unfold, particularly with her involvement in Daphne’s marriage prospects. Queen Charlotte’s character is a standout, not just for her role in the plot but also for how she represents the blending of historical accuracy with creative reimagining.

From a visual perspective, Bridgerton is a masterpiece. The show’s creative direction and production design are nothing short of spectacular. Every frame is rich with detail, from the opulent ballrooms to the meticulously crafted costumes that reflect both the period and the characters’ personalities. The series’ aesthetic is both grand and intimate, capturing the essence of Regency-era London while imbuing it with a vibrancy that feels new and exciting.

The series has been rightfully praised for its attention to detail. The hair and makeup, for instance, aren’t just about looking good on screen—they’re about telling a story. Whether it’s the intricate hairstyles of the Bridgerton sisters or the Duke’s impeccably tailored outfits, every element serves to enhance the narrative. It’s no surprise that Bridgerton has garnered accolades such as Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and nominations across various categories, including the Primetime Emmy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and NAACP Image Awards.

Bridgerton Season 1 Brings A Fresh Perspective on Historical Drama

What makes Bridgerton truly remarkable is how it reimagines the traditional historical romance. While it embraces many of the conventions of the genre, such as the tension between love and duty, it also challenges them in surprising ways. The inclusive cast offers a fresh perspective, particularly in a genre that has long been criticized for its lack of diversity. By presenting a world where characters of different races coexist and thrive, Bridgerton not only entertains but also provokes thought about representation in media.

Moreover, the series touches on themes of empowerment, especially for its female characters. In a society that often seeks to constrain women, the women of Bridgerton find ways to assert themselves, whether through scandalous letters, social manipulation, or the pursuit of sexual liberation. The show doesn’t shy away from exploring the complexities of gender and power, making it more than just a romantic escapade—it’s a commentary on the societal norms of the time, many of which resonate with contemporary issues.

Why Bridgerton Series is a Must-Watch

In the end, Bridgerton is more than just a period drama; it’s a bold reimagining of the genre that blends romance, scandal, and social commentary into a visually stunning package. With its inclusive casting, compelling characters, and intricate plotlines, it’s no wonder that the series has captured the hearts of viewers worldwide. Whether you’re a fan of historical dramas or new to the genre, Bridgerton offers something for everyone—a love story that’s as much about finding oneself as it is about finding a partner.

The show’s success is a testament to Shonda Rhimes’ ability to take a familiar story and make it feel fresh and relevant. As we await the next seasons, one thing is clear: Bridgerton has set a new standard for what period dramas can be, proving that love, scandal, and diversity make for an irresistible combination.

    Review of Bridgerton Season 3

    Review of Bridgerton Season 3

So far, here’s what we know of Part 1 of Bridgerton Season 3.

Set in the 19th century, Season 3 opens with a fresh group of debutantes entering London’s marriage market. As these young women prepare to impress Queen Charlotte and navigate the societal gossip fueled by Lady Whistledown, the show unfolds with familiar faces from Bridgerton seasons 1 and 2.

Penelope Featherington, brilliantly portrayed by Nicola Coughlan, is at the center of this season. Returning to London after a summer away, Penelope finds herself embroiled in shifting relationship dynamics. Estranged from her once-close friend Eloise and feeling the sting of Colin Bridgerton’s criticisms, she decides to seek a husband to escape her oppressive family. However, her outdated appearance and lack of social finesse prove to be obstacles.

Penelope’s journey of transformation begins with an overhaul of her wardrobe and fashion sense, shedding her childish attire for elegant silks and a more refined hairstyle. Yet, even with material changes, mastering the art of conversation and courtship was still a challenge.

Colin, returning from travels, offers to assist Penelope in her quest. Colin redirects his perception of Penelope as their interactions deepen, sparking a newfound attraction between them. The budding relationship and chemistry between Penelope and Colin is beautiful to watch as they transition from friends to potential lovers.

While the season delivers on its promise of romance and drama, some secondary plots lack the same level of engagement. Francesca Bridgerton’s storyline feels somewhat derivative, echoing themes explored in previous seasons. Similarly, supporting characters like the Mondriches and Lady Violet could benefit from further development.

Where did we end season 7? Here are the basics to get you all caught up.

    The Lannisters

    • Cersei Lannister promised to join the fight against the White Walkers, but *psych* she plans on reneging and leaving the rest of Westeros to fight them up north while she chills in King’s Landing. But she’s hired a mercenary army to help fight them when they’re done killing the undead. Also, Cersei says she’s pregnant with baby-daddy-brother Jaime’s child, but he bailed from King’s Landing to fight the dead at Winterfell.
    • Tyrion Lannister has betrayed his fam, and is still advising Daenerys.

    The Starks

    • Jon Snow has pledged his allegiance to Daenerys (oh he pledged, all right) and the two have officially entered the bone zone. BUT (and it’s a great butt) they are related. Still, Auntie Dany and her nephew Jon are planning to fight the undead together.
    • Arya and Sansa are in Winterfell, having just killed Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish. Sisters, doing it for themselves.
    • Bran is still sitting in his room, telling people he’s the Three-Eyed Raven. That boy really changed after spending the summer at tree camp.

    The White Walkers

    • The undead have officially breached the wall and are marching south. Oh and they have a dragon now — Viserion the ice dragon is about to mess things up.

Episode 1 Recap: Reunions are coming

Dany tells Jon that Sansa doesn't like her. Made some thing that seemed like a vailed threat.
Dany tells Jon that Sansa doesn’t like her. Made some thing that seemed like a vailed threat.

For those of us who just rewatched the wall-melting, dead-marching, ice-dragoning action of the end of season 7, the season 8 premiere was a lot more about establishing action and plot points for the episodes ahead.

Daenerys’ armies are on their way north and that means it’s time for everyone to descend on Winterfell and take stock before the battle against the undead starts.

Sansa Stark reunites with Jon Snow in Game of Thrones Season 8, Premier.
Sansa Stark reunites with Jon Snow in Game of Thrones Season 8, Premier.

You want reunions? You’d better believe you’re going to see some reunions!

Everyone’s here! Tyrion sees Sansa and they have the kind of “whatcha been up to?” banter that you’d have with your ex-husband at parent-teacher night.

Arya massively downplays how many people she's killed in Game of Thrones Season 8, Premier.

Jon sees Arya! The two play a game of “check out my sweet sword” and Arya massively downplays how many people she’s killed.

It was the Winterfell equivalent of your bigger brother asking you how many beers you had at that underage party. Everyone sees Bran, but they all kind of pretend they have to go send that important raven so they don’t have time to chat now, sorry.

But there’s no time for reunions now! The Lords of the North are dealing with the fact that Jon bent the knee (and his heart, awww!) to Dany. What happened to the King of the North? Since when did pledging allegiance to the Starks mean a 2-for-1 deal with a Targaryen? Jon defends his decision (in between making some pretty hectic “Get down low and Snow, Snow, Snow” eyes at Dany) and the general mood is that everyone needs to band together to fight the dead.

The northern lords meet in Winterfell. Game of Thrones Season 8, Premier.
The northern lords meet in Winterfell. Game of Thrones Season 8, Premier.

Meanwhile, Sansa, who’s been doing quite a good job of running logistics in Winterfell, thank you very much, feels a bit like a host who’s just found out dinner is going to have an extra 10,000 guests. She definitely doesn’t have enough leftovers for all these armies. Also, do dragons eat gluten-free?

    Meanwhile at King’s Landing

Cersei smiles when she heard the Night King has broken through the wall.
Cersei smiles when she heard the Night King has broken through the wall.

Cersei, who has seriously upped her epaulette game since season 7 (armored shoulder pads are in) is quite delighted to learn that the dead have broken through the Wall and are on their way to go full brain-buffet on Winterfell and Daenerys’ armies. This lady has a proven record of being pretty chill about the undead.

Cersei sips her wine after making out with Euron Greyjoy. Game of Thrones Season 8 Premier.
Cersei sips her wine after making out with Euron Greyjoy. Game of Thrones Season 8 Premier.

With all that free time, now that she doesn’t have to battle wights, Cersei makes time for The World’s Worst Fiance, Euron Greyjoy. He’s torn himself away from playing Xbox on his boat to appear in Cersei’s throne room (which has been upgraded since last season with some lovely cast iron fire pits — $165 on Amazon). Greyjoy presents Captain Strickland, the new leader of the Golden Company mercenary army. Imagine a poor man’s Jaime Lannister — he’s kind of good looking, but in an “I just got here, who are you?” way. He’s probably going to be important later, hence the borderline hotness.

But turns out the Golden Company doesn’t quite match its Tinder profile pic when it comes to head count or battle elephants and Cersei is visibly disappointed. But nothing that a little bedroom time with Euron won’t fix. Just quietly, “I wanted those elephants” is just about the best post-coital line I’ve heard in a TV show.

You know how else Cersei likes to ease her stress? By putting a bounty on her brothers’ heads! (That’s right, brothers PLURAL!) We catch Ser Bronn in a brothel (with naked ladies — that’s your cue to drink if you’re playing a Game of Thrones drinking game). Qyburn the mad scientist gives him a sweet crossbow and intimates that Cersei loves a little dramatic irony. Kill Tyrion and Jaime with the same crossbow that killed her father? Bronn, ever the sell-sword, accepts.

Yara promised to retake Iron Island. Theon Greyjoy wants to return to the North.
Yara promised to retake Iron Island. Theon Greyjoy wants to return to the North.

MEANWHILE. Back on the Iron Island’s battle boats we have learned that Yara Greyjoy is alive. What disappeared in Season 7 may never die! Younger brother Theon comes to rescue her (hopefully making good for his poor actions last season). After a little sibling jostling (oh, I only headbutt ’cause I care), the two are on good terms again. But Theon’s heart is elsewhere and Yara, sensing this, gives him leave to go and fight with the Starks.

    Magic dragon ride!

Drogon watches with keen interest as Danny and Jon Snow make out in Game of Thrones Season 8 Premier.
Drogon watches with keen interest as Danny and Jon Snow make out in Game of Thrones Season 8 Premier.

Back at Winterfell the armies are still gathering, so there’s time for a well-earned magic carpet ride — sorry, dragon joyride — for Jon and Dany. Cue 108 seconds of complete fan service that, let’s not lie, we have all absolutely been waiting for. They fly to a waterfall (the ghost of Ygritte quietly curses Jon’s apparent penchant for cave sex) and the dragons watch as they make out.

Jon Snow makes some great eye contact with Drogon mid kiss
Jon Snow makes some great eye contact with Drogon mid kiss

Yes, this is the equivalent of going home with a date who refuses to kick their three basset hounds out of the bedroom (Jon Snow makes some great eye contact with Drogon mid kiss) but it is Grade-A content that is here for the Jon & Dany shippers.

We cut away from Pervy Drogon to Gendry, who is busy smithing weapons out of dragonglass (turns out he’s a boss at that) and, what’s that, another reunion?

It’s the Hound coming face-to-face with Arya! “You left me to die,” he says. “First I robbed you,” she retorts. It’s a bit of a nothing reunion, to be honest, but maybe The Hound is right: Arya is a “cold little bitch” now and she isn’t here to have some adorable moment with the man who killed her friend (remember Mycah, the Butcher’s Boy? Sweet mercy that was a long time ago — I’ll forgive you for forgetting).

We get a bit more from Arya’s reunion with Gendry (with some more “oh hey, check out my sweet dagger” action). Arya played it very cool and I am definitely willing to consider shipping these two. She also put in an order with Gendry for a custom piece of weaponry. We only get a quick glance but it looks like a piece of dragonglass that attaches to an existing hilt (maybe her Valyrian steel dagger?) Man, I hope this becomes Arya’s Knifey-Spoony.

Meanwhile, Dany’s back from Make-out Creek and runs into Sam! An adorable meet cute. Because this is bumbling Samwell Tarly, no one has told him his father and brother are dead. Whose job was that?! Jorah, maybe? Daenerys tells him they died by dragon fire because they wouldn’t bend the knee. Sam runs outside to find the nearest toilet cubicle to cry in, but instead finds Bran creeping in the courtyard. (Sorry, it’s not Bran. It’s the Three-Eyed Raven. FFS, Bran, you make it hard to like you). Raven Boy tells Sam it’s time to fill Jon in on his awkward lineage (awkward that it turns out he’s a king, awkward because he’s been necking his aunt — not great all round).

Sam meets Jon in the crypt and tells Jon the truth: “You’re the true king. Aegon Targaryen, sixth of his name, protector of the realm. All of it.” Jon is… not stoked. But kudos to Kit Harington for acting the emotions of “reanimated bastard who’s just learned his Girlfriend-Queen is now his Aunt-Inferior.” Those years of acting school just paid off.

    Night King woz here

Reveal! Tormund Giantsbane didn’t die in the great wall melt of 2017. He’s alive! Of course, the show spoiled that in its own trailer for Season 8, but if you didn’t know then here was another reunion for you. Tormund is at the Last Hearth (home to House Umber, a family of the north pledged to House Stark) with Beric “Just Wait While I Light My Sword” Dondarrion. They find the last remaining members of the Night’s Watch, including Eddison Tollett (man, I did NOT think this guy would survive back in season 1), who reveal that the Night King has been through and left his calling card.

What’s that? A child stapled to the wall surrounded by limb pieces? You could have just left a Post-it note. The wall boy is Ned Umber, who earlier in the episode had been sent to gather the last of his family’s men to join Jon and Dany’s northern army, but instead got turned into a wight (that was a nice jump scare) and pinned up in the world’s most depressing Catherine wheel. They light him on fire (because what’s the point of a Catherine wheel if you don’t light it up) and get some much needed warmth before trudging on.

After all the waterfall makeouts and dragon flights, this is the Game of Thrones gore we remember. Plus, the spiral pattern on the wall is one we’ve seen since season 1, and it definitely holds significance.

    One more thing…

In the closing moments of the show, a dark and mysterious rider arrives at Winterfell (wouldn’t it be sweet if this how the Night King rocked up to kill everyone). But it’s not the Night King. It’s — reveal — Jaime Lannister!

Of course, there’s Bran, watching him like a creeper across the courtyard. But then again, he probably knew Jaime was coming. Don’t you know? He’s the three-eyed raven. He’s kind of a big deal. Breathe it in, because that’s one of Game of Thrones’ final cliffhangers ever.

    The verdict

There wasn’t a great deal of action, but this episode is definitely laying groundwork for what we’ll see in the remaining five episodes of this season. It feels like the perfect bridge to connect the action of season 7 with the battles and drama still to come. For die-hard fans wanting a big bang, you’ll probably need to wait a little longer. But for those who love the fan service of all their favorites coming together, then this was good fun.

    BBNAIJA 2018 Finale Recap

When Ebuka told them to take one last walk and switch off the lights in the House, Miracle and Cee-C knew that one of them was the ultimate Housemate for this season’s Double Wahala.

With smiles all over their faces as they switched one light at a time, they finally said their goodbyes to Big Brother and exited for the main stage.

When Davido’s Fall faded, the mood electrified as the Housemates entered the stage and soon after, Ebuka had to calm the crowd to which he slightly succeeded.

    Winning Before Winning

Miracle’s will to win has always been rewarded by his ability to give his all in every challenge given to him. Whether it’s the Head of House, a Task or the Arena games, he always brought his A-game.

So when he was announced as the overall winner for the Payporte’s Arena games, it came as no surprise as he’s won more than any other Housemate.

With an overall time of 53 minutes and 30 seconds throughout the season, Miracle was awarded a cash prize of One Million Naira.

    The Crowning

As usual, Ebuka asked the auditor to confirm if the results were independently verified and the auditor confirmed.

After they were shown the prizes to be won and with a total of thirty million votes this week; after a long silence and seeing both contestants shaking and nervous, Miracle emerged as the ultimate Big Brother Naija winner.

Emotions ran high from everyone and Miracle’s in-House sweetheart Nina; was at the fore embracing him as he struggled getting up after his excitement threw him on the ground.

Dancing With the Stars recap: ‘The Semi-Finals’

We’ve made it to the season 25 semi-finals, Dancing fam! Of course, we’ve only made it by the skin of our teeth: So many people are injured! There’s a whole mess of very serious-sounding leg injuries going around, and Jordan has a scratched cornea. Hold on kids, we only have one more week to go!

Before we get to the finals though, our top five will have to dance two routines: The first has the pros picking the song for their partners, and the second will be a tribute to an iconic DWTS dance that earned a perfect score in the past. Exciting, no? And then, of course, one couple will be asked to pack their dancing shoes and go. We all know who it should be, but after 25 seasons of Dancing With the Stars, we are all well aware that things don’t always go as planned. To the dances!

Tango, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers

Determination and positivity. That’s what Emma hears when she listens to this Proclaimers jam, and that’s what comes to mind when she thinks of Drew. Drew is also very into this tune because the Proclaimers are Scottish, and so is he. Hence the kilt he’s sporting. When you’re in the semi-finals after weeks of riding the bottom of the leader board, might as well have fun with it. And that’s what Emma and Drew do in this tango that is very un-tango-like. Forget technique, posture, and artistry — just enjoy the ride! They may take away our mirrorballs, but they’ll never take our freedom…to do embarrassing things on live television!

Sex and the City cast: Where are they now?

From 1998 to 2004, HBO’s “Sex and the City” reigned supreme as the first television show to provide a narrative about single women living in New York City during the early aughts.

The show starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis and followed the fictional romantic and professional lives of this glamorous quartet.

The biggest love story of them all, of course, involved SJP’s Carrie Bradshaw and her on-again, off-again romance with Chris Noth’s character, Mr. Big.

In honor of Chris’s 63rd birthday on Nov. 13, 2017, we are taking a look at what he and more stars of the show are up to today. Read on for more “SATC”!

  • A Sneak Peek of The Blacklist Winter Finale: Might not be a Happy Ending for Tom Keen (Video)

A Sneak Peek of The Blacklist Winter Finale: Might not be a Happy Ending for Tom Keen (Video)

It’s been two months since “The Blacklist” premiere teased the flash-forward scene of a gun-wielding Reddington (James Spader) standing over the bloodied body of Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) in an ominous twist of events. Now, in Wednesday night’s winter finale that scene comes full circle for the NBC drama. And it’s all because of a suitcase full of old bones.

The winter finale episode entitled “Ian Garvey” picks up where last week’s human-smuggling episode left off, with Tom in the clutches of the bespectacled, heavy-set Garvey (Jonny Coyne). The Blacklister is not only seeking the suitcase full of human remains, but is insisting on entrapping one Red Reddington, and using Tom to do it. Meanwhile, Liz (Megan Boone) has the entire Post Office out looking for her husband, and Red continues lying to her while tracking Tom’s whereabouts through his top-secret connections.

As seen in Variety‘s exclusive clip below, it won’t take long for Reddington and Tom to reunite following the kidnapping, or to realize that Tom is in pretty rough shape from the entire ordeal.

In the video above, Raymond Red Reddington is seen cleaning up what looks like a bullet wound on Tom Keen.

With the body count mounting and a suitcase full of secrets ready to come to the forefront, Variety talks with Eggold, showrunner John Eisendrath and creator Jon Bokenkamp about what to expect in the winter finale in an exclusive interview.

“The Blacklist” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
