OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, announced on Friday that it has removed its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, following a review that revealed a lack of consistent transparency in his communications with the board of directors.

ChatGPT is an AI-driven chatbot employing natural language processing to generate lifelike conversational interactions. This language model is trained to answer queries and craft various written materials, including articles, social media posts, essays, code, and emails. ChatGPT, the brainchild of OpenAI, the research company specializing in artificial intelligence was introduced in November 2022.

Why was OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Fired?

In a statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed a loss of confidence in Altman’s ability to lead OpenAI. Altman had gained global recognition over the past year as a prominent voice in Silicon Valley, discussing both the promises and potential risks associated with artificial intelligence. His abrupt and largely unexplained departure has created uncertainty about the future of the industry.

OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, will assume the role of interim CEO immediately, as the company initiates a search for a permanent replacement. The announcement also mentioned that another co-founder and top executive, Greg Brockman, who serves as the board’s chairman, would step down from that position but remain with the company as president. However, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Brockman later announced his resignation, stating, “based on today’s news, I quit.”

According to Brockman’s Friday night post, Altman was informed of his termination during a video meeting with the board. Excluding Brockman, where co-founder and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever delivered the news. Brockman expressed shock and sadness at the board’s decision. Learning of his own removal from the board in a subsequent call with Sutskever.

The statement from OpenAI did not disclose the specifics of Altman’s alleged lack of candor but emphasized that it impeded the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities.

Altman, in a Friday post on X, expressed his love for his time at OpenAI. He described it as transformative and praising the talented individuals he worked with. He promised more details about his future plans. In a Saturday morning post, Altman referred to the situation as a “weird experience” and thanked his followers for the “outpouring of love.”

Altman helped in founding OpenAI as a nonprofit research laboratory in 2015. But it was ChatGPT’s widespread recognition that brought him into the public eye as a figurehead for generative AI. He had engaged with multiple heads of state to discuss the potential and challenges of AI. Participating in a CEO summit at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference just a day before the announcement in San Francisco, where OpenAI is headquartered.

Founded in 2015 by a cadre of entrepreneurs and researchers, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, OpenAI enjoys support from various investors, like Microsoft. In addition to ChatGPT, OpenAI is the creator of Dall-E, an AI-powered text-to-art generator.
